Extra Divers Speyside

Extra Divers Speyside

Location

Speyside is a small village on the northeast coast of Tobago and is best known for its outstanding dive sites around nearby islands such as Goat Island and Little Tobago. The airport is about 40 kilometers away, with a transfer time of approximately 1 to 1.5 hours depending on road conditions. The small Extra Divers Speyside dive center is located directly at the Speyside Inn Resort.

Thanks to its unique Atlantic location, Tobago offers divers much more than many other Caribbean islands. Diving is possible on both the calmer Caribbean side and the more nutrient-rich and diverse Atlantic side, which hosts an exceptionally rich marine ecosystem. It is believed that many fish species have migrated from the direction of Brazil, resulting in species that are rarely found on other Caribbean islands.

Tobago is suitable for diving year-round, with water temperatures consistently around 28°C, even on the Atlantic side. However, stronger waves and currents can be expected there, creating spectacular drift dives. There are dive sites suitable for all experience levels.

The best travel period is year-round, although there is slightly more rainfall during the European summer months.

Dive Center

The dive center is located directly on the hotel grounds of the Speyside Inn Resort. The dive boat departs from a jetty approximately 1.5 km away.

Daily, one morning boat trip with two dives and a surface interval of about one hour is offered at one of the nearby islands. Departure is in the morning, with return depending on the dive site between 13:00 and 15:00.

A wide variety of dive sites are available. Depending on conditions, some sites may have currents and waves. Most dives take place on the Atlantic side, although sites on the Caribbean side such as The Sisters are also visited regularly.

Transfer from the hotels to the jetty is conveniently provided by pickup truck. From there, the dive boat departs to the dive sites. Diving is conducted with 12-liter aluminum tanks, with both DIN and INT fittings available. Rental equipment is available on site, although advance inquiry is recommended for very small or very large sizes.

Nitrox is currently not available. There is no house reef; all dives are conducted as boat dives. Training is conducted according to SSI standards in English.

Dive Area

Tobago is one of the Caribbean’s most diverse and unspoiled diving destinations. The island is influenced by a current that brings nutrient-rich waters to its shores, creating ideal conditions for an exceptionally rich marine ecosystem with an impressive variety of reef fish, schooling fish, and pelagic species.

The dive area is characterized by two very different sides: the calmer Caribbean side and the more dynamic Atlantic side. While the Caribbean side offers sheltered, clear dive sites and colorful coral gardens, the Atlantic side features nutrient-rich waters, stronger currents, and spectacular drift dives with a very active underwater environment.

In the northeast around Speyside lie some of the island’s most famous dive sites. From here, regular trips are made to the offshore islands Goat Island and Little Tobago, known for their coral formations and impressive fish diversity. With a bit of luck, manta rays, turtles, eagle rays, and large schools of fish can be observed.

Additional highlights include sheltered sites such as The Sisters on the Caribbean side, as well as areas around Charlotteville and Pirates Bay, which are impressive both underwater and above the surface.

Thanks to year-round tropical water temperatures of around 27–29°C, diving conditions in Tobago are ideal throughout the year. The island offers dives for all levels – from relaxed reef dives to more challenging drift dives – and is considered a true insider tip in the Caribbean, especially among independent travelers and nature divers.
