Virgin Cocoa, our private island spanning approximately 8 hectares, is a true haven for those seeking peace and a close connection to nature. The island boasts a stunning sandy beach and a spectacular house reef, along with a wide range of amenities: a stylish restaurant, a welcoming bar, a pool with comfortable sun loungers and umbrellas, a spa area for relaxing massages, and a small souvenir boutique.
Taking a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear sea is a real highlight here, though it’s only possible at high tide.
Since 2024, Virgin Cocoa has been connected to the neighbouring island of Nunukan via a nearly 1 km long jetty – perfect for morning jogs or romantic evening strolls.
Accommodation
The island offers 18 exclusive bungalows, each with 70 m² of living space, thoughtfully crafted from carefully selected, sustainable materials. Every bungalow is located directly on the beach, providing breathtaking views of the ocean.

Superior Suites offer stunning views of the neighbouring island of Nunukan, while the Deluxe Suites, facing the lagoon, guarantee breathtaking sunsets.
WIFI: Available in the Deluxe Bungalows, as well as in the office, pool, and restaurant areas.
Sport & Wellness
Yoga: A diverse range of yoga sessions is available, with complimentary classes held every morning and evening (year-round, with only a few exceptions).
Beach volleyball and excursions to Nunukan are also available. For an additional fee: diving and spa treatments.
Catering & Culinary
Choose between half board and full board, and let our exceptional kitchen treat you to a variety of culinary delights. Enjoy seasonal vegetarian and vegan dishes, refined fish and meat creations, and a tempting selection of homemade desserts and cakes. Start your day with a hearty à la carte breakfast and indulge in a multi-course dinner each evening, featuring Asian, Indonesian, and Western specialities. Drinking water (served in carafes) is included with meals.

Environment
The island is perfectly integrated into its natural surroundings – not a single tree was felled for its construction. Modern, eco-friendly systems such as wastewater treatment, composting, and rainwater harvesting facilities ensure the responsible use of the island’s resources.
Journey
Arrival via Jakarta or Balikpapan airport, from there by domestic flight to Berau.
From there it is a 3-4 hour speedboat ride to the island.
Depending on flight times, an overnight stay in Jakarta may be required on arrival and departure.
Boat transfer:
The boat leaves from Berau (Kalimarau Airport) on the following days:
• Arrival: Saturday and Wednesday
• Departure: Saturday and Tuesday
The boat trip takes about 3 hours. The boat is very comfortable, offers space for up to 20 people and has an on-board toilet.
Important notes:
• The boat must leave Berau by 3:00 PM at the latest to arrive in Maratua in daylight.
• For departure, the earliest departure time from Berau should be around 12:00 PM to allow for a relaxed transfer.

Note for guests from Singapore:
Since the Scoot flights from Singapore to Balikpapan are only offered three times a week and often do not harmonize with the boat schedule, we recommend a stay of about 2 nights in the Samboja Lodge. A perfect opportunity to experience the jungle and the orangutans. On request, we will gladly take over the booking.
